Here is a variation ...
Here is a variation that I'm playing with. Instead of tying the loop first, I tie an overhand knot at the base then tie my way up from there. When I reach the desired length I only need to fuse the two ends.

Yes you do singe ...
Yes you do singe the rope so that it won't fray and unravel. Most people use a lighter to singe the rope butI prefer to use a small wood-burning tool witha flat tip. I use it to cut the rope so that the rope is singed as soon as I cut it. You can get the tool from most hobby stores.
